Fairchild's fig roots (Ficus subcordata). The roots of the fig tree grow downward, engulfing the host tree while also climbing upward towards the sunlight. These are buttress roots that provide extra support and cover a wide area to help gather nutrients from the soil. Photographed in the Philippines.
