Alice Hamilton (1869-1970), American toxicologist and occupational health pioneer. Hamilton founded the study of industrial toxicology and occupational medicine. She worked particularly on the effects of industrial metals and compounds on the body, an issue that was of increasing importance following the Industrial Revolution. In 1919 she became the first woman professor at Harvard Medical School, and in 1947 the first woman recipient of the Lasker Award in public health.
