Metatarsal bones (centre) link the phalanges to the mid-foot bones (lower centre), which include the cuneiform and navicular bones. These are then attached to the tarsal bones, including the calcaneus bone (heel, not clearly seen). These bones articulate with the lower leg bones (bottom) to form the ankle.
