Apollo modules. Command and Service Module (CSM, at upper centre) docked with the Lunar Module (LM, at bottom centre) over Earth during the Apollo 9 mission (3-13 March 1969). The Apollo 9 mission orbited the Earth 151 times. During this time the techniques of undocking, rendezvous and docking between the CSM and LM were tested by astronauts James A. McDivitt, David R. Scott and Russell L. Schweickart. The CSM was designed to orbit the Moon whilst the LM was intended to be a landing craft. The tests performed during this mission paved the way for the landing of the first man on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission (16-24 July 1969).
