Furnace testing a nose cone for the NASA space shuttle at over 1,000 degrees C. The nose cone is made of a insreusableins carbon composite consisting of layers of graphite fibre cloth in a carbon binder with a coating of silicon carbide. The composite's heat resistance qualities are needed to withstand the heat generated when the shuttle re-enters Earth's atmosphere.
