Relic of the Gulf War. An anti-personnel mine, found near the Iraq-Saudi border. Clearance of these and other devices was essential after the 1991 Gulf War. Military and civilian workers were employed to clear explosive ordnance from the desert, particularly near the oil fields of Kuwait. The mine seen here would usually be buried with the 'spikes' at top just below the surface. Any person or vehicle treading on one of the spikes would cause the mine to explode. The mine, manufactured in the former Soviet Union, contains 2. 5kg of explosive surrounded by 200 small ball bearings (shrapnel).
