Mill on a sugar cane plantation. 19th century artwork of workers using donkeys to power a mill on a sugar cane plantation in Saint Domingue (Haiti). The grinding stones (centre) have cutting blades on them, which are being used to chop and shred the sugar canes. The shredded canes will then be mixed with water and crushed between rollers to extract the sweet, sugary juices. Further refining is then carried out to produce the sugar. Artwork taken from Grands Hommes et Grands Faits de l'Industrie (Great Men and Great Facts of Industry), France, circa 1880.
