Cartier's visit to Hochelaga. 16th century artwork of the visit by the French explorer Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) to the Native American fortified village of Hochelaga (beaver lake) in October 1535. Named by the French Monte Real (Mount Royal), this area was in what is now Montreal, Canada. The French (lower left) are greeting the villagers (lower right). A plan of the village (centre) includes a wooden defensive palisade surrounding it. At right is a key in Italian. This illustration, which was by the Italian cartographer Giacomo Gastaldi (c.1500-c.1565), was published in Delle Navigationi et Viaggi (Venice, 1556).
