Second Grinnell Expedition. Artwork of the USS Advance trapped in ice in Baffin Bay during the Second Grinnell Expedition of 1853-1856, led by US Navy medical officer Elisha Kane (1820-1857). The expedition was one of several attempting to ascertain the fate of the 1845 expedition led by the British officer Sir John Franklin (1786-1847). Like Franklin, Kane and his crew spent two years in the Arctic, but, unlike Franklin, Kane and most of his crew survived. However, Kane's health was damaged, and he died a year later.
