This is a subarctic aapa mire (a specific type of northern peat wetland) area inside the northern boreal forest zone and measurements at the station include carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) concentrations at two heights and fluxes using the eddy covariance technique. Absence of large local and regional pollution sources are main reason for this location. Part of a global programme for monitoring and assessing chemical composition and related physical characteristics of the global background atmosphere. The station is maintained by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) and the Finnish Forest Research Institute (METLA).
