Needle & thread. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a needle, threaded with cotton (red) and inserted up to the eye into a piece of fabric (blue). The regular, criss-cross weave of the fabric is tangled and messy where the needle has punctured it. The cotton thread appears thick and rope-like, with fine, fly-away fibres visible against the needle body. Magnification x4 at 35mm size.
