Stained colon. Endoscope view of a dark patch (upper right) in the colon, called melanosis coli, caused by prolonged use of laxative drugs to treat constipation. The drugs contained anthracene, a pigment extracted from coal tar. Melanosis coli is usually asymptomatic and harmless.
