Probiotic products claim to colonise the gastro- intestinal tract with bacteria that counter the effects of pathogenic bacteria. Probiotic bacteria are claimed to help digest food, produce essential vitamins and maintain normal bowel functions; they may even improve the recovery of intestinal dis- orders and stimulate the immune system. Healthy people have many bacteria in their intestines, but their numbers may become depleted due to a poor diet or the use of antibiotics and other drugs.
