Breech position foetus. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of a breech position foetus in its mother's uterus. The skeleton of the foetus is seen with the head at upper left, ribs at top centre and legs at centre. The mother's pelvis is yellow. Breech presentation results in a baby being born feet or buttocks first instead of head first. Although the majority of breech babies are delivered safely, there is an increased risk of complications as the buttocks and feet do not dilate the cervix as efficiently as the head. The most common complication is compression of the umbilical cord during delivery. This leads to oxygen deprivation in the foetus and may cause brain damage or even death.
