Red blood cells (erythrocytes) are interspersed between the fibres. Connective tissue provides metabolic and structural support for other tissues and organs throughout the body; more distinct & specialised systems include bone, blood, tendons & ligaments. Fibres comprising connective tissue are of 3 types: collagen, reticular & elastic. Where properties of strength & elasticity are required (as with tendons & ligaments), the fibres are densely & regularly packed. Magnification: X 440 at 35mm size.
