A ground-based, low-power laser beam is fired into the night-sky to track a Terrier-Malemute sounding rocket launched from a U. S. base in Hawaii. The laser beam appears as a blue fan in this time- lapse photograph; observatory domes at the Maui Air Force base appear at bottom. The aim of the experiment was to veryify atmospheric correction of the laser beam, as part of series of tests on the viability of targeting ground- based lasers against hostile ballistic missiles in space - one of the objectives of the US Government's Strategic Defense Initiative, the so-called Star Wars program.
