MODEL RELEASED. Fuelwood plantation. A farmer stands among young poplar (Populus sp.) trees in a fuelwood plantation. The trees show 15 months' re- growth after being cut to ground level when one year old to stimulate the development of multiple woody stems. Fuelwood is a form of renewable energy. After harvesting, the wood is chipped and then burnt in special furnaces to release energy. Unlike fossil fuels, fuelwood does not contribute to global warming because the amount of carbon dioxide produced by burning is the same as that absorbed by regrowth of trees in the plantation. This plantation is part of a government-sponsored trial taking place in Avon, UK.
