Laser beams in the Atomic Vapor Laser Isotope Separation (AVLIS) system. AVLIS is used to enrich uranium used as nucear fuel. Natural uranium contains only 0.7% of the fissile U-235 isotope, whereas most power stations need about 3% U-235. The AVLIS enrichment process uses lasers that are precisely tuned to ionise atoms of U-235, leaving U-238 atoms unaffected. The U-235 may then be attracted toward an electrode. The gas drawn off from around the electrode will consequently be richer in U-235.
