Micromotor. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a chain of micromotor gears (orange). Each of these gears is smaller in diameter than a human hair and 100 times thinner than a sheet of paper. The chain is driven by a pair of electric micro- engines (not visible) connected to a drive gear (yellow). The whole device, called a micromotor, was etched into the surface of a wafer of silicon by the same techniques used to make silicon chips.
