Micromotor. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a chain of micromotor gears (orange). Each of these gears is smaller in diameter than a human hair and 100 times thinner than a sheet of paper. The chain is driven by a pair of electric micro- engines (not visible) connected to a drive gear (yellow). The whole device, called a micromotor, was etched into the surface of a wafer of silicon by the same techniques used to make silicon chips. Micromotors could one day be used in exotic nanotechnology" applications such as microscopic drug pumps implanted in the human body. Magnification: x260 at 5x7cm size. Magnification: x855 at 10x8 inch size."
