Microwaved food contamination test. Cheese burger ready for cooking in a microwave oven, during research into the contamination of food by chemicals in its packaging. The airbrush (at left) will be used to spray the box interior with a marker chemical in the vials, at a concentration similar to that of the contaminants found in the box. Once cooked, the food is liquidised and the chemicals are extracted using a solvent. The contaminants are organic chemicals from the packaging's ink. Research has shown that designs which improve airflow through the packaging reduce food contamination. Photographed at the Central Science Laboratory in Norfolk, UK.
