This historic picture was the first close-up photograph of the Moon's surface. It was taken by the Russian Luna 9 shortly before it became the first spacecraft to make a successful soft-landing on the Moon on February 3, 1966. The Luna 9 radio signals were received by the Mark 1 radio telescope at Jodrell Bank, near Manchester, England, where this image was produced.
