15th century illustration of the Greek mythological figure Pygmalion on knees in front of his statue asking forgiveness. Pygmalion was a Cypriot sculptor who carved a statue of a woman and fell in love with it. After Pygmalion prayed to Aphrodite, the statue came to life and they married. Illustration from the a translation of the continuation of Guillaume de Lorris's 'Roman de la Rose' by Jean de Meun (c.1240-c.1305), published in Bruges, circa 1490-1500.
