GRIMOIRES - TALISMANS Talismans are magical figures designed to achieve certain effects by spiritual means - usually by evoking the power of a particular angel or demon. Like the majority of talismans, the six recorded here are ultimately derived from the grimoire tradition. From top, reading left to right. Talisman from the Enchiridion of Pope Leo III. A talisman from the grimoire, The Sage of the Pyramids, recorded by A.E. Waite in The Book of Ceremonial Magic, is designed to grant invisibility to the possessor - supposedly, it also confers the ability to pass through solid walls: it should be painted on black silk. A talisman from The Sage of the Pyramids, designed to afford access to any places, and to read the thoughts of others. It should be painted on light grey satin, and (perhaps more than any other talisman) requires the contemporaneous use of a magic ring to be effective. For details, see A.E. Waite, The Book of Ceremonial Magic. A talisman, from the same source, designed to aid in the discovery of hidden secrets, and to permit access to places in an invisible manner. The image of Capricornus, the stellar Goat, links with this association, as the zodiacal sign governs places hidden within the earth. The talisman should be painted on violet satin. The obverse of the talisman of zodiacal Virgo, designed against illnesses associated with this sign (affecting the womb, and the female private parts). From Paracelsus, The Archidoxes of Magic, 1656. The reverse of the talisman of zodiacal Virgo, designed against illnesses associated with this sign (affecting the womb, and the female private parts). From Paracelsus, The Archidoxes of Magic, 1656.
