Miss Phil Paddon , a twenty - four year old Devon girl is to make an 11 , 000 mile trek , the principal stage on which is from Algiers to Johannesburg . She is surveying the route to be taken by competitors in the 1936 road race , and hopes to do her eleven thousand miles trek and return to England in early May . She is crossing to Boulogne and going from there to Marseilles . Included in her luggage , which she is packing in London , is a cine camera , two evening frocks , concentrated food stuffs , chocolate and a gun . 30 January 1935
