Picture by Roger Bamber: 26 February 2007 : A cavern 70 feet below the streets of Reading where a network of 18th and 19th century chalk mines has been discovered. There has been a history of subsidence in the town but until now there were only believed to be 3 mines to worry about. Cavers (pictured) have now mapped 30 mines and miles of linking passages, sparking a row over who is responsible for shoring up the many areas where the old mining works are crumbling away beneath modern homes. Pictured is Emmer Green South Mine with left to right, cavers Nick Moulton, Paul Stacey, Annette Price and Graham Old.
