Cook runs London hotel on 7p 'capital'. For five days, a woman cook, for chambermaids, two waitresses and a pantry boy had been running the Cedars Mansions Hotel, consisting of four adjoining houses in Gunterstone Road, West Kensington. Mr Arthur Wells, the proprietor, and his wife, left the hotel last Sunday and later a telephone message was received, saying that Mr and Mrs Wells were not coming back. There was only 7d, in the office and hardly any coal. The gas was cut off on Tuesday. There were 30 guests in the hotel, who had to eat out. Now there are only five and they are making arrangements to go. The cook has paid the wages of the staff out of money received from the guests in payment of their bills. All are now leaving. 8 September 1938
