Lord Ashfield, the head of London Transport, and Sir Ronald Matthews, chairman of the London and North Eastern Railway board (Sir Ronald drove) the first passenger train to be run from the West End to East Finchley. Passenger trains will begin to run for the first time publicly over the extension of London Transport's Northern Line past Archway, Highgate, to East Finchley on 3 July. The service will be the first instalment of the North London Electrification Scheme undertaken jointly by the London and North Eastern Railway and London Transport, and also the first railway extension to be opened under the 瞿40 million construction programme.
