Silhouetted in the dawn, US Marines wade ashore at Tinian Island to reinforce American assault troops fighting inland. They were carried to the shallow reef by landing barges from transport vessels standing offshore. All organized resistance collapsed on the island on 1st August 1944, tendays after first Marine units landed.
