Mr William Lacey of Bennett's Cottages in Capel near Dorking is celebrating his 102nd birthday - he is bedridden but not feeble and he complains because he is not permitted to shave himself - Mr Lacey was born at High Wycombe - he learnt to plait straw for women's bonnets when he was six and he received 6d ( 2.5p )a week which he gave to his mother who had been left a widow with four children all under seven - when he was eight and a half he went to work on a farm - his wages were 1s 6d ( 7.5p) a week and a small can of skimmed milk daily - photo shows Mr William Lacey listening to messages of congratulation being read by his daughter Miss Sarah Lacey February 1935
