Miss Kathleen Ferrier appoointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year Honours List. Formerly a telephone operator at Blackburn, Lancashire, she made her opera debut at Glyndebourne in 1946, and is now recognised as one of Britain's leading contraltos. 31st December 1952.
