First WACs embark for France . Carrying their packsacks , US army WACs climb the gangplank or a troop transport on route to France from England . The first of their service to go to Normandy , the detachment of 49 WACS and six officers , representing 23 US states , was assigned to the headquarters of the Forward Echelon Communications Zone in France .
