Ship damaged by 1946 atomic bomb tests. Deck of the USS Pensacola (CA-24) showing damage inflicted during the Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll, in the Pacific, in July 1946. US military personnel are examining the remains of equipment placed on the ship's deck to test the effects of the atomic explosions. Caution signs have been painted on the gun turret to reduce fire risks and prevent the taking of radioactive items as souvenirs. This ship (a cruiser) was one of many test ships used in these tests. It survived both the tests (Able and Baker) that took place on 1 and 25 July 1946. After radiological and structural studies, the ship was sunk in 1948.
