According to Roman mythology, Rome was founded in 753 BCE, its founder being Romulus, the twin brother of Remus. The image of the foundling babies being suckled by a she-wolf has been a symbol of the city of Rome and the Roman people since ancient times. From the late 3rd century BCE, many versions of the myth have been recorded by various authors including the Roman historian Livy and the poet Virgil in his national epic ???he Aeneid?? The body of the she-wolf in this bronze sculpture was crafted by an Etruscan craftsman in the 5th century BCE, but Romulus and Remus were added by the Florentine artist Antonio Pollaiuolo between 1484 and 1496.
