'Marshal Jean-Baptiste-Jules Bernadotte, Prince of Ponte Corvo, Charles XIV of Sweden', 1804, (1896). Born Jean Bernadotte (1763-1844), he served a long career in the French Army and was appointed Marshal of France by Napoleon who also made him Prince of Pontecorvo on 5 June 1806. In 1818 he became King Charles XIV John of Sweden and Charles III John of Norway. Upon his Swedish adoption, he assumed the name Carl. Engraving after the painting by Fran?ois Kinson. 'Kinson's original, painted 1804, commissioned by Napoleon for the Hall of the Marshals of the Tuileries Palace in Paris, was destroyed by fire during the Paris Commune 1871'.
