The Six-tubercled River Turtle, Podocnemis sextuberculata, attains a length of just over a foot. As such, it is one of the smallest species of South American River Turtle in the genus. The species inhabits the upper Amazon Basin of Peru, Brasil, and Colombia. The species is known locally around Iquitos, Peru, as 'Cupiso.' The IUCN lists this species as VU (vulnerable). The species is harvested for food and its eggs are collected for the same purposes. This individual was photographed in Amazonian Peru in January 2010.
