Aztec priests sacrificing prisoners to the god Huitzilopochtli at the great temple of Tenochtitlan. Wide stairs lead to the platform where Hernan Cortes attempted to stop Montezuma from making a human sacrifice. Tenochtilan was the capital of the Aztec empire, founded in 1325, destroyed by the Spaniards in 1521 and now the site of Mexico City.
