This terrific and bloody conflict between the gallant Army of the Potomac commanded by their General George G. Meade, and the host of the Rebel Army of Virginia under General Lee, was commented on Wednesday July 1st and ended on Friday July 3rd at 5 o'clock PM. The decisive battle was fought on Friday ending in the complete rout and dispersal of the rebel Army. Undying fame and a Nation's thanks are ever due the heroic soldiers who fought with such unflinching bravery this long and desperate fight." The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1-3, 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The battle with the largest number of casualties in the American Civil War, it is often described as the war's turning point. Union Major General George Gordon Meade's Army of the Potomac defeated attacks by Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, ending Lee's invasion of the North. Between 46,000 and 51,000 soldiers from both armies were casualties in the three-day battle.
