King George III taking the waters at Cheltenham. Cheltenham, also known as Cheltenham Spa, is located in Gloucestershire, England. With a motto of "Salubritas et Eruditio" (health and education), Cheltenham has been a health and holiday spa town resort since the discovery of mineral springs in 1716. The visit of George III with the queen and royal princesses in 1788 set a stamp of fashion on the spa. George III (June 4, 1738 - January 29, 1820) was King of Great Britain (1760-1801) and King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until his death.
