California Gray whale - A mother and calf photographed off the coast of Central California during the southern migration, in January. (Eschrichtius robustus). Most calves are born in the lagoons of the coast of Baja California, Mexico. A few are born along the open coast of northern California, and must be strong enough to swim with their mother to the sheltered lagoons where they will remain for 3 or 4 months. .
