Light micrograph of a liver needle biopsy in haemochromatosis. The hepatocytes show brown iron deposits. In the bottom centre, there is a fibrotic portal tract. Haemochromatosis is a genetic (autosomal recessive) iron disorder, which results in increased iron absorption from intestine and excess iron storage in several organs, mostly the liver. The excess iron storage causes liver injury and periportal fibrosis, leading, finally, to a micronodular pattern of cirrhosis.
