Ballyseede Castle near village of Ballyseedy (Irish: Baile U ?Sh韔da; meaning "town of Sheedy"; has Ballyseedy Wood which contains the ruins of Old Ballyseedy Castle. New Ballyseedy Castle; now Ballyseede Castle; has been the seat of the Blennerhassett family from 1586 to 1967. History of the area began with Sir Edward Denny who mapped the area in 16th century. History of the castle started with Thomas Blennerhassett who rented the today 30 acres area for an annual amount of 30 British Pounds and a red rose. He built the first castle; from 1586 to 1590. In 1721; William Blennerhassett rebuilt the castle; totally new. Today restored; it is used as a luxury castle hotel. In 1837 to 1841; Arthur Blennerhassett extended the building with the neo-Gothic wing. he was as well member of parliament; sheriff of County Kerry and marrid the daughter of the Knight of Glin. Last of the clan was Hilda Blennerhassett; who was awarded the Britsh medal "Mons Star" for her services as nurse during the Great War. She died in 1965. Her portrait can be seen in "Mummies Room" in the ground floor. it is said that she is the ghost who haunts the castle. Heraldic animal of the Blennerhassett was the Irish Wolfhound. It can be seen as heraldic ornament above the main entrance. As well; there are two Irish Wolfhounds running around the castle. One is called Mr. Higgins. Nearby; during Irish Civil War and Independance War; in 1923 happeend the famous Ballyseedy massacre; in March; 1923: 23 Republican prisoners were killed in the field and five more judically executed in a period of four weeks. The killings and executions started after a five Free State soldiers were killed by a body trap while searching a Republican dugout at village of Knocknagoshel; County Kerry; on 6th of March; 1923.
