Ireland; Co. Kerry; Dingle Peninsula: South Pole Inn; former home of Antarctic hero Tom Crean (1877 - 1938); across Memorial Park; village of Annascaul. Tom Crean is an irish and local hero of Dingle Peninsula. Crean participated in several Antarctic expeditions; also the most famous deadly one with Scott during the race to the South Pole; in 1912. Tom Crean survived and saved several lives. As well; he became even more famous for his participation at the failed Ernest Shakleton expedition with the "Endurance"; in 1916. He was one of those; who rowed in a small rowing boat from Elephant Island to South Georgia - a trip of 800 nautic miles - within 16 days. In this way; they saved the life of all members of the Endurance expedition. A replica of this rowing boat called "James Caird" can be seen in todays Crean`s Brewery; a micro brewery; in Dingle Town. Here; Tom Crean and his wife Ellen had a milk shop; after World War I. But his main basis with milk shop was in Annascaul; where he lived and stayed until his death in today`s South Pole Inn; located right across the street at the Memorial Park for Tom Crean.
