Skeletal bone showing Haversian canals with numerous small openings on the canal surface called canaliculi. The continuity between the canaliculi and the Haversian canal provides a pathway through which exchange of nutrients and gases take place. The lucunae has small openings in the back wall, and mark the beginnings of canaliculi. The canalicular openings appear somewhat larger in ground bone specimens because a small amount of mineral component is removed during preparation to produce an etched appearance.
