His interest in Thomson of Duddingston\'s free style and his own keen study of nature led him to develop an un-academic approach to his subjects. He often painted preparatory studies on the spot before working them up in the studio. The inclusion here of the date, 9 September 1846, suggests this fluid oil sketch was such a study.
