Photograph by Private W B Bowyer, Royal Buckinghamshire Hussars, World War One (1914-1918), 1918. After service in Egypt and Palestine, Bowyer?s unit left Alexandria on board HMT ?Leasowe Castle?. She was torpedoed and sunk by U-51 on 27 May 1918 in the Mediteranean. Bowyer was picked up by a life boat and then returned to Alexandria by a Japanese destroyer, but 102 of the passengers and crew died.
