Lucas van Leyden: Adoration of the Magi; Lucas van Leyden; c. 1510; Oil on panel; This triptych; or three-sectioned painting; was created by an unidentified artist who was a follower of the Dutch painter and engraver Lucas van Leyden. The subject is the biblical story following the birth of Christ when three kings arrive bearing gifts. In the center; Mary holds the infant Christ while one king; draped in a red and gold brocade robe; presents his offering. Another king; cloaked in green; waits his turn; a third; dark-skinned and wearing black and gold; is pictured in the left panel. Van Leyden was known for his detailed rendering of objects; note; for example; the finely painted fur around the green robe and the glass beads along the trim. The scene is continuous across all three landscapes; an invention of the late 15th century; the tradition had long been to treat each section as a wholly separate picture.; Overall: 30 1/8 x 39 1/4 in.
