Ireland; County Westmeath; Castlepollard; Tullynally Castle: view of the castle; built from 1665 onwards; rebuilt in early 1800s in gothic revival style. In 1665; Henry Pakenham; captain of the Parliamentary Dragoons; granted land including Tullynally. His grandson Thomas became first Baron of Longford. The 3rd Baron Langford became as well Earl of Longford. In starting 1800s; the castle was rebuilt in gothic revival style and permanently extended. Today; it is the biggest privately owned house in Ireland. The Pakenham family is living here; since mroe than 350 years. British army General Sir Edward Pakenham was born in Tullynally Castle. His elder sister Kitty Pakenham married Arthur Wellesley; in 1806; who became Duke of Wellington and won the battle of Waterloo against Napoleon Bonaparte; in 1815. The country house has a 12 acres park with woodland gardens and walled gardens. Since 21st centruy; there is also a Chinese garden with pagoda and a Tibetan garden with waterfalls and streams. The castle is also called Pakenham Hall.
