Uckermark county; community of Gerswalde; Gerswalde Manor House (German: Schloss Gerswalde): view from outside; a first Manor House was built here for the noble von Arnim family; in 1724; and extended to a two-storey building in classical style; in 1832. Owner Felix von Arnim (1862 - 1919) and his wife Emily (1869 - 1952); born Schalk; and a daughter of the rich US-American owner of a brewery; finally finished the building; around 1900. In 1921; the son Adolf Oswald von Arnim was given the whole estate; but lost all until 1926 due to hazardous financial speculations. In 1929; the German Anthroposophical Society (German: Anthroposophische Gesellschaft) bought the manor house and installed here a therapeutically children`s home for up to 80 mentally ill children. Director of this institute was Franz L鰂fler (1895 - 1956); an anthroposophist and scholar of Rudolf Steiner. This curative home worked until 1945. During this Nazi time; L鰂fler hided as well successfully Jewish people in the manor house and saved their lifes. As well; in 1945; due to his intervention; Russian army did not destroy the village of Gerswalde. From 1945 to 1950; the manor house became a Waldorf school with eigth classes; led by L鰂fler. In 1950; German Democratic Republic (GDR) closed everything and put L鰂fler into prison; for 10 weeks. From 1950 until 1994; the manor house became a stately run children`s home. Since 1994; here is a Youth Center with training centers for young people established. In the former manor park; there are some historic graves of the von Arnim family. The Gerswalde manor house is located 150 m away from the ruins of Gerswalde Castle (German: Burg Gerswalde); which was a water castle in medieval times and taken over by the von Arnims; in 1463. It was an important ancestral seat and one of the historic headquarters of the von Arnim family; the biggest land owners in the Uckermark area.
