7152653 Trial of Warren Hastings, 1788 (litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Trial of Warren Hastings, 1788. Warren Hastings, b 1732, went to India as a "writer" for the E India Co, and subsequently became president of the council of the Co, a position which he filled with great ability. He reformed the administration, and re-organised police and military systems. Parliament changed the constitution of the Bengal government, associating with Hastings (who became Governor-General) several new members sent from England. In spite of constant difficulties with these men "the genius of Hastings saved the British Empire in India." After his return home he was impeached for "high crimes and misdemeanours," but was acquitted after a trial lasting seven years.
