Peritoneal tuberculosis, illustration. Numerous nodules attached to the peritoneal investment of the intestine and the mesentery. These nodules resemble metastatic cancerous growths, but they are tuberculous granulomas arising from a widespread infection with M. tuberculosis. If untreated the nodules may form purulent exudates, fibrous adhesions between loops of bowel, obstructions, fistulas, perforations and abscesses. From Bollinger, O. 1901 Atlas und Gundriss der Pathologischen Anatomie, vol 1. Lehmann, Munich.
